I got fed up trying to register with the bike sharing apps in Japan as a foreigner… This place was super easy. Friendly staff, loads of ebikes and non. Super comfy seats. … All you need is a photo of your passport. Drop the bike back by 10pm.

Translated by us: The staff explained how to use the bike and what to watch for, start to finish. Rental hours are longer than elsewhere, so we rode without rushing.

There are rental bikes, and then there are their rental bikes.... The best bike I have ever gotten in a rental shop in Asia. I got the cheapest one, and it basically drives itself.

Inside the shop: a long row of tokyobikes with rental tags

Translated by us: Walked past, rented on a whim, no booking needed. The bikes are brand new and I got my favourite colour. Self-return at night meant no pressure on time.

Rented the electric for 3 days and had zero issues. Started out at 100% and finished at 40%. Pickup procedure was smooth and dropped the bike off after hours. Shop was clean and well organized.

Translated by us: Very cheap, good service. I want more Thai people to find this place. Typed it myself, no Google Translate.

Hiring bikes was the best decision we made in Kyoto. … Xi was fantastic. She was so helpful and clearly and thoroughly explained the bikes, hiring and return process, equipment and how to ride appropriately in Japan.

Three tokyobikes parked at the shop door

Translated by us: We had no plan to ride. We walked past, liked the shop and the bikes, and rented on the spot. The owner told us lots of places to eat, explore and take photos.

We rented bikes for the day, really reasonable price. The gentleman that served us was very kind and helpful. Couldn’t have been easier.

Translated by us: We rented bikes for a whole day and it was amazing. The hosts looked after us like a luxury.

How it works.

  1. Book online

Pick a bike and your dates, and pay a ¥1,000 deposit. It comes off the rental when you pick up. Questions first? Message us on WhatsApp or LINE.

  2. Passport photo, not passport

When you register at the counter, upload a photo of your passport from your phone. The passport stays in your bag.

  3. Helmet and insurance, free

Both come with every rental. Leave your bags with us while you ride.

  4. Back by 22:00

The counter is open 9:00 to 17:00. After that, return the bike at our door yourself until 22:00.

Questions

Anything else? WhatsApp us.

What are the rules for riding in Japan?
  • Keep left. Bikes ride on the left, same as cars.
  • Hands free. No umbrella and no phone while you ride. Both are against the law here.
  • Walk it through crowds. In Nishiki Market and busy shopping streets, get off and push.
  • Park in bike parking. Bikes left on the pavement get towed.
  • Lights on after dark.
Do I have to book?

No. If a bike is free, walk in and ride. In spring and autumn bikes go fast, so booking ahead is safer.

What if my plans change?

Change your dates for free up to 23:59 the day before pickup, and the deposit moves with you. Cancel by then and we refund the deposit in full. Same-day cancellations and no-shows aren't refunded.

What do I bring?

Your phone with a photo of your passport, and a way to pay. Helmet and insurance are on us.

Can I bring the bike back late?

Until 22:00, at our door. We show you how when you pick up. Arriving in the afternoon? The night ride runs 15:00 to 9:00 next morning, ¥400 less.

Can my kid come along?

Small kids ride in the child seat of the GYUTTO CROOM R, our mom's e-bike.

Which languages do you speak?

Message us on WhatsApp or LINE before you come.

Where to ride.

Every loop starts and ends at our door. Pick an easy one, a full one, or let the dice decide.
